Outsourcing of forklift training to schools and providers

Outsourcing means the utilization of forklift training professional not belonging to the company or organization that takes the complete responsibility and role of training and development of forklift operators. It includes development safety culture in the workplace, administration of rules, designing of training safety course, and any process relevant to safety and health of personnel.

It also refers to business process contracted by outside company such as fleet management, equipment maintenance, and equipment monitoring. Many companies nowadays outsourced most their business processes. Why would the company outsource the forklift training? Some of the common reasons is cost saving and time saving allowing the company to focus more on business strategy matters, improvements in legislation compliance to follow the federal, state or local standards. The lack of the capability within the organization to meet the OSHA standards in forklift certification or the plan of the company to supply best training practices for the workers, are the second most common reasons why employers outsourced the forklift training.

Many companies choose more comprehensive approach, outsourcing not the training but many of the aspects of the health and safety requirements of the company. Hence, many forklift training schools sprouted in just several years because they know the demands are great. They can make a good business out of outsourcing. As a matter of fact, in US alone, it contributed several billions of dollars for the economy. The industry is so great because the demand is more than the supply.

Although, many employers are beginning to outsource and the trend appears to be growing, most of them only outsourced the aspects of the business they know cannot be handled by someone from inside. Here are some of the reasons why some companies do not outsource forklift training: The inability of the forklift training school or consultant to meet the requirements set forth by the company, the false promises these training providers give to entice client to settle on a contract, and the inability of the provider to meet OSHA forklift certification standard.

Any decision to outsource the forklift training is complex matter that needs to be thought of before delving into hiring an outsourcing company. Training course contents that do not add any value to the nature of the business of the company are likely to be deleted from the curriculum. One size don’t fit all. Hence, forklift training school must tailor a course curriculum based on the need, requirements and setup of the company for them to be chosen as a training provider. If HSE department is installed in the company, usually it exist in large organization, many of their function do not meet or irrelevant to the welfare of the workers, HSE manager must install a tailored safety program for the forklift operators to mitigate the risk of accidents, lessen the probability of mishaps and near misses, advancement of the skills and competency of the forklift operators.

For example, a company that has a strong skilled training standard and that values forklift training and sees it as important to the business operation doesn’t need to outsource because they have separate section or department that handled safety and health of the personnel. However, that company may turn  to outsourcing providers or training schools for specific training needs only.
