Accrediting Training Organisations in the UK

In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive has approved accrediting bodies, namely:

  • Construction Safety and Training Boards (CITB)
  • Lantra National Training Organisation Ltd.
  • Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT)
  • National Plant Operators Registration Scheme Ltd (NPORS)
  • Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) Ltd
  • Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSAR)

Hence the name accrediting organization, they “accredit” centres or individuals who may be deemed capable to deliver forklift training.

If you are taking a training course from an accredited centre, you may have the assurance that the course you are taking is in accordance with HSE’s Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP) standard and legal guidance.

If You Are Holding a Foreign Forklift License, Will It Be Valid in the UK

The simple answer is “No.”

Simply because other counties have their own standards and laws different from the UK.

In the UK there are higher standards regarding certifying the forklift drivers. Those standards are in place to protect the workers, and in other countries, may have different rules.

What can you do then if you’re a holder of a foreign forklift license?

You can take the training anytime you want, you just have to contact a centre, enroll in a course, complete the training, and in no time, you can get your certificate since you are already experienced.

If you hold a license issued in other countries, you could be a better applicant than those without. The prospective prefer those experienced candidates for the job. The employer may be the one who will send you for the training, they will pay for everything.

Forklift Training Courses You Can Choose

Your experience and level of ability determine what course and how long you will be taking it.

There are four forklift courses you can choose from:

Novice Training – if you never had any experience driving the forklifts, then this course is intended for you. Expect this course to be lengthy because it covers all aspects of operating the truck, that includes classroom teaching, practical training and written and performance tests.

Conversion Training – This training is intended for those individuals who have experience driving a certain type of forklift who want to extend their knowledge to operate other types of lift trucks.

Semi-Experienced/Untested Training – If you are familiar driving forklifts and can operate the machine, but you don’t have any formal training, this training is for you. This training is also for those who completed training in the past with their licence expiring.

Refresher Training – If you already have undergone a formal training before and if you want your knowledge current and up-to-date, this training is for you. If you’ve forgotten safety guidelines and operational techniques because you haven’t practiced it, this training is also for you intend.

Training Requirements

You must understand that there is a minimum age to drive a forklift. According to the Health and Safety Executive, you will only be qualified to operate a forklift if you reached the minimum school leaving age. The HSE also mentions that you can legally drive forklifts in ports if you are 18 years.

The HSE’s intention is to protect young workers from hard, they would not let them work in a hazardous environment such as the ports.

The second basic requirement to take forklift training is the medical standard. It is recommended for someone who will be working with forklifts to meet a suitable level of medical fitness.

Working with forklifts does take its toll on your body. The nature of the job is physically demanding and working with these heavy machines could be perilous if you aren’t able to get in and out of the truck.
