What You Need to Undergo During the Training

  1. The theory or the class instruction part of the training – you’ll learn basic safety in the operation of the forklift, specifications of the equipment you want to train in, general workplace safety, and other topics that may be deemed necessary.

  2. The second portion of the training course is the practical session also called hands-on driving – this behind-the-wheel operation is the most important as you will learn the practical skills necessary to operate the forklift safely and efficiently. You will undergo training in a simulated workplace scenario, you will be given instructions on how to finish the tasks that you can encounter in the everyday operation of the equipment.

  3. The final stage is the assessment – a few years ago, when I was just starting this job, the assessment involves passing the written test and the performance evaluation. But nowadays, I heard this written assessment is no longer being administered, but this depends on the provider, some conduct the written test while others don’t.

  4. Receiving your certificate – when the instructor is satisfied with your performance in the assessment, you will be given your certificate. The certificate is your proof that you’ve undergone the course that you can show to your employer. This certificate also is a requirement if you want to apply for the F endorsement.

How Much Does It Cost to Take a Forklift Training

When taking the full course, it may cost you around $225; while the refresher course is less expensive at $150. The full course is obviously more expensive due to the reason you will spend a lot of time in the class compared to the refresher.

If you’re planning to operate the equipment on the road, you need an F Endorsement, and you can simultaneously take the full course and the F endorsement training, and it may cost you $280 to complete both. See below the instruction on how to apply for the F endorsement.

You may also have the option to include this unit standard also called the 10851 (the completion of the forklift course) into your NZQA Record of Learning, an additional fee of $80 will be required in order to do this.

Please note that when making an inquiry, clarify if the training fee does include the GST.

When Does the Licence/Certificate You’ve Attained Expire?

Most people referred to the certificate and operator card given to them after completing the training course as the licence. Actually, it is a certification; and this does expire.

You must take refresher training to renew your licence, and this happens every three (3) years.

If you’re an employer who manages a lot of employees that require licence renewal, the best thing you can do is to arrange a training course onsite. Doing so not only enables employees to learn and be updated with the present regulations and industry standards but also solves many workplace issues such as near misses and accidents that lead to product damage and worker injury.

The onsite perhaps may also prevent downtime as you don’t have to send the workers out to attend the class at a different facility; it is more convenient for your side and can save money.

Getting the F Endorsement Allows You to Operate the Forklift on the Road

Earning the F endorsement includes passing the assessment. In order to improve your chance of getting approved for F endorsement, it is recommended to take a preparatory course on this. You may contact one of the training providers mentioned above and inquire about this.

In order to apply for the F endorsement, here are what you need to have:

  • NZ full car driver’s licence (not a motorcycle licence)

  • Pass an eye screening test (bring a medical certificate attesting to this). The certificate must not be more than 60 days old from the date of its issuance. If you don’t have a prior eye screening certificate, you can have the eye screening done at the driver licencing agent - the office where you are going to submit the requirements.

  • OSH certificate (the certification you’ve attained after completing the forklift course). This certificate must state that you’ve been trained to drive forklift safely on the road.

  • DL19 form which you can download from this resource

  • Have $44 as the application fee, please note this is the current fee, it may change without prior notice.

While, there are two (2) classes you can apply for:

  • Class 1 licence (with F endorsement) - usually given to an operator/driver if the forklift he will be operating has 18,000 kgs GLW or less.

  • Class 2 licence (with F endorsement) - the opposite of the previous class, this is given when the forklift has a GLW above 18,000 kgs.

If you’re confused about which one you need to apply, you can ask the training instructor for more information or you may contact the NZTA at this phone number 0800 822 422. You may also contact the same number if you’re unsure if you really need an F endorsement for your line of work.

Lodging of the application happens in the nearest NZTA office, or at the nearest licencing agent from where you are in Napier-Hastings. Bring all the requirements mentioned above.

Please note that your F endorsement expiration is the same as your car driver’s licence.

To Make a Conclusion

It is best recommended for you to earn not only the certificate but also the F endorsement even your line of work doesn’t need the latter. It is also for your interest to include your unit 10851 into your NZQA Record of Learning as this provides verification of your competency as a forklift operator.

A lot of businesses in Napier-Hastings need qualified forklift operators, you won’t be having a hard time finding one. You just have to prove your qualification and show your worth, you’ll see, a good opportunity will come along your way.
