CPCS Telehandler Categories and Training

The CPCS telehandler training course will give the basis in operating such forklift. Just like any other vocation course, it includes both the classroom-based discussion and practical tutorials. When you are successful taking the course and receiving your certification, this will enable you to have your CPCS Red Trained Operator Card. The card is your solid evidence to your prospective employer that you’ve undergone the necessary training making you more attractive career-wise. Your CPCS Red card is valid for only two years, during this time period, you need to take NVQ level 2 training to have your licence retained.

The CPCS card for telescopic handler operators has four categories:

  • A17A Telescopic Handler (Industrial Telescopic Handler)
  • A17B Telescopic Handler (Up to 9 Metres)
  • A17C Telescopic Handler (Above 9 Metres excluding 360 slew)
  • A17D Telescopic Handler (All sizes including 360 slew)

In order for you to apply for one of the categories, you must have a valid Health & Safety test pass (in the last 2 years) as entry requirement to be able to take the theory test and practical assessment.

For you to step up a bit, you can transition from having CPCS Red Trained Operator Card to CPCS Competent Operator Blue Card. Holders of blue cards have demonstrated their ability to work without any supervision, in fact, you can supervise red card holders at work. For you to be able to apply for a blue card you must be a holder of the red competent operator card, pass the CITB HSE test, attained NVQ or SVQ appropriate to the category you are applying, submit application form.
