Is a load backrest required on a forklift? The forklift load backrest extension is part of the equipment that ensures the materials don’t fall on the driver as it holds and rests the load against a steel flat frame that makes the loading and unloading operation safe thus reducing the possibility of accident and product damage.
The load backrest is subject to many debates whether the forklift needs it or not. One such discussion I frequently hear is that if the forklift is originally equipped with backrest, is removal considered modification under OSHA?

According to OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.178(e)(2) that states if the load has the possibility to fall back to the operator and create a hazard, the owner of the equipment must install a forklift load backrest extension. However, if the load does not post a hazard to the operator, the forklift is not required to be fitted with such extension.

In this case, if you going to remove the extension, you don’t need written approval from the equipment manufacturer as it is not considered a modification.
With that being said, it is up to your judgment if you want to equip the forklift with a load backrest. If the loads are tall and loose, and there’s a potential that the loads can fall back and create a dangerous situation, then it is always a good idea to install the extension.

OSHA requires the installation of this extension whenever necessary.

Equipment Inspection Should Cover the Backrest

During equipment inspection, it is important to thoroughly inspect the load backrest to ensure that it is firmly in place.

The first thing to look for when inspecting is the crack and bend which can easily be seen. If such damage is found, immediately report it superior for immediate replacement.

The constant vibration of the equipment for a long period of time causes the mounting bolts of the backrest to loosen; if during inspection you notice the mounting bolts are loose or missing, report it for immediate corrective action.

When inspecting, make sure the load backrest doesn’t hit any part of the equipment when the mast is in operation.

The replacement of the load backrest is not cheap as well as its repair. To avoid early damage to the extension, never use it as an anchor should the forklift need to be used to pull things.

Forklift Training Should Also Include Topics Related to the Use of the Load Backrest

Whether you have an internal safety training program or you’re outsourcing training to a third-party provider, the topics related to the use and operation of the forklift load backrest should be included.

If the operation of the forklift involves frequent lifting of loads that exceeds the height of the carriage and are at risk of falling rearward to the overhead guard, the load backrest has to be installed not only to make the load secure during operation but importantly to prevent an accident.

An accident involving injury or fatality is the last thing we don’t want to happen. The load backrest plays an important role in the safe operation of the equipment and keeps the operator safe.
